Advertising tips

Tips on How to Have Good Advertising Advertising a company's products or services is a tricky thing to do but by following these simple rules it may be a bit easier to get right! Make sure your advertisements tell a story and do not just convey information A good advertisement must portray a story that has a beginning where someone encounters a complicated situation, a middle where someone confronts and attempts to resolve the situation and finally an end where the outcome is revealed. As advertisers you must not explain the action in the story they just leave it for each individual person to interpret it they way they understand the action. If you just simply display information in an advertisement it is too boring and people will not take interest in it. Make sure the audience will get the purpose of the advertisement You must ensure that as well as having an entertaining advertisement/story you must make sure there is a direct connection to the purpose of the advertisement and that people will realize the call to action. Make sure the advertisement triggers basic emotions in the audience You have to make sure that the advertisement triggers some kind of emotion with the audience so that the person will remember the advertisement. There are eight basic emotions: joy, surprise, anger, sadness, fear, disgust, anticipation and acceptance. By triggering these emotions in advertisements it means that people only need to see the advertisement once and they will remember it forever. Therefore, you will not need to pay for advertisements to be shown again and again. Make sure you use easy arguments in advertisements Easy arguments are the conclusions people reach without a thought. You must try and use this technique in advertisements or they will not be successful. Make sure the advertisement does show AND tell You must ensure that advertisements do not just show something without telling the audience what it is or what it does. Make sure you use language and images that are related to people's senses You must ensure that in the advertisement the images and language make sense to the audience. Make sure that your advertisement match what people see and what they hear You must ensure that the audio and visual messages that you include in the advertisements are ones that are normally coordinated together. Make sure you stay with a scene long enough for impact You must not include lots of quick cuts to different scenes in an advertisement because people have limited processing capabilities so make sure you keep the camera on the scene long enough to make a lasting impression. People tend to take about eight to ten seconds to process and produce a lasting emotional response to a scene in an advertisement. Make sure the visual images are powerful and speak for themselves You must ensure that the visual images in advertisements are powerful enough so that not much talking has to be done. Make sure that you use memorable music Using memorable music in an advertisement will enable people to trigger their emotions every time they hear it.

Advertising types

Types of Advertising There are various types of advertising that are used: In house advertising In house advertising is a department within a company that deals with all the advertising of the companies products or services. This type of advertising is used instead of getting outside advertising agencies to do it for you. The main reason for this is that advertising agencies can cost a lot of money and the company may not be seeing the benefits. Also, the company has far more control over everything that the public sees including its company image. Company Name advertising This form of advertising concentrates on the brand of the company rather than the products that they sell. By doing this it establishes the company name first and then the products later. Service advertising This is the most difficult type of advertising because you do not have a physical product that the customer can feel, smell or see. Business to Business advertising Sometimes advertising agencies do not deal with the public at all, they just place advertisements in trade magazines or use direct mail. Co op advertising This type of advertising means that the company pays a proportion of the advertising costs along with the advertising agency. This also means that the company has a a lot of say when it comes to what the ad looks like and where it is placed. Another alternative is to team up with another local business such as a pizza shop, this means that you can half the price of brochures etc and also place each others advertisements in the two different brochures. Internet advertising This form of advertising is placed on the Internet. This is an extremely popular method of advertising for a number of reasons. The Internet is used by millions of consumers today, therefore it is a useful way to reach a lot of people in a relatively cheap way compared to placing adverts in newspapers, TV etc. All the other common forms of advertising are listed below: Newspaper advertising Radio advertising Television advertising Direct mail advertising Brochures Car signs Flyers Word of Mouth

Finding best price

Getting the right price for your products and services can often prove to be much harder than it seems. Bear in mind that price is not the only consideration that customers will take when making a purchase decision. Quality, if they like you or not, after sales service and recommendations from friends are often even more important that price. A low price will often be perceived as being a low value or service. There is such a thing as being too cheap. When starting a business, it is always tempting to start off at the "charity rate" by quoting a low price during your negotiations with your initial customers. Obviously, you then increase your chances of getting some customers to buy but your hourly rate will probably be poor. This is a common method used by new business start ups. While it is not necessarily a mistake, it is not sustainable in the long term. If you intend to use the above method, just make sure that the rates you intend to charge initially to get your business of to a faster start are included in your business plan , including an estimate as to when your rates will increase. To make money and achieve your goals , you need to charge the maximum amount that customers will pay for your level of product and/or service. To get the right price for your products or services, you should first do research into your competitors charges. Since you will probably have a unique selling point, your best price may not be the same as your competitors. You may need to go higher to pay for the extras you provide or lower to reflect the savings your company enjoys. The next step in finding your best price should be to vary the amount you charge. If your prices are too low you will have more work than you can handle but your hourly rate will be poor. In other words, you and/or your staff will be working harder than you need to for the same money. Raise your prices a little at a time. More and more customers will say no to your business. Be brave, get some no answers. When your net profit goes down you know you have gone past your maximum price. At that point, too many customers will have been going to your competitors for alternatives too often and your income will go down. Remember that it is OK to have some customers say no. After all you can not please all the people all of the time. If every customer is saying yes, that could be a good indication that you are too cheap.

Index

Advertising Agencies An advertising agency is a business that specializes in developing and placing advertisements for companies so that their products and services are recognized. Advertising agencies not only develop advertising strategies for companies but can also take control of all branding, sales promotion and marketing activities. Advertising agencies come in all sizes, everything from one to two person shops to large multinational companies. Also, nowadays you do not need to have a huge advertising agency to land all the large contracts with major clients, it is extremely common for smaller advertising agencies to handle large accounts. Therefore, there are huge opportunities for a start up advertising agency to enter the market and become a success. It is also common for advertising agencies to specialize in particular industries such as retail, charitable etc. Therefore if you have worked in a particular industry or sector and are thinking of starting your own advertising agency then that specific industry may be a good place to start because you will know the market very well. The advertising industry at the moment is continuing to grow due to the fact that all companies are always creating new products or services and they require them to be advertised to the public in order to make sales. Thus, there will always be opportunities for new advertising agencies.

Model

Modelling abroad Acting Child models baby old people So you can use this book time and time again throughout your life. It will probably be the single best investment you ever buy. This is what Michelle did.:- How to get a job as a model? Stage 1 – Decide what type of modelling would be best suited to you? It is important to establish from the beginning what type of modelling would be suitable to yourself. In order to make this decision it is vital that you gain an understanding of what the different types are. The different types of modelling are high fashion modelling, commercial modelling, promotional modelling, body part modelling and hip-hop modelling. The most recognizable type of modelling is high fashion modelling. If you are interested in high fashion modelling there are definite height and weight restrictions that need to be adhered to. A female fashion model should be at least 5'8 (1.72 m) and be around 34-24-34 inches (86-61-86 cm). A male fashion model should be at least 5'11 and be around 38-40inch (97-102cm) chest and 30-32inch (76-81cm) waist. Ideally you should have distinctive features, clear skin, healthy hair, straight white teeth and have all round healthy fitness and stamina. It is also vital that you can work long tiring hours within a hectic environment and be a complete professional when working with other models and photographers. The work will most probably involve appearing in fashion shows or magazines for high fashion designers. If you do not believe yourself to be the in the high fashion category then commercial modelling may be an alternative option. In commercial modelling there are no restrictions what so ever. You can be any size, shape, height or weight. This is because often in commercial modelling it is more important that you represent a real person that the average consumer can relate to than look perfect. It is also vital that you have some acting skills because you want to be able to sell the product to the consumer through genuine actions and facial expressions. Another aspect of commercial modelling that you may find beneficial is that you can work on a part time basis. This allows you to acquire a competitive hourly rate and more importantly an additional income. Another type of modelling that may be an option is promotional modelling. This entails handing out samples of products at conventions or conferences. To be successful at this type of modelling you have to have a strong personality and be a people person – i.e. to interact with the general public easily. Body parts’ modelling is when you only need to model one part of your body which you feel looks exceptionally good. For instance, you may feel that you have very full and perfectly shaped lips, long toned legs, well shaped feet or even perfect ears! It could be any part of your body from your toe to your hair! The benefit of this type of modelling is that you do not need to have the perfect body you just need to have one perfect part of your body. Hip-hop modelling is where you appear in hip-hop videos or merchandise e.g. calendars or DVDs. This type of modelling would suit someone who was interested in hip-hop music or artists. There are no height or weight requirements as such to be a hip-hop model but it is suggested that you have a hip-hop “look”. So the way you dress needs to be appropriate for this industry sector. Stage 2 – Take your own photographs In the early stages there is no point in spending excessive amounts of money on a portfolio of photographs. So the best option would be to take a number of quality photographs yourself. If you know someone (or know someone who knows someone) who is a keen amateur photographer ask them to do it for free. If necessary, you could offer to pay them when you get work or promise to send them anybody in the future who asks for your advice as to where you got your first photos done. One of the photographs should be of full length with bikini/trunks, a head photo straight on, then two from different angles, a full length photo with casual wear and finally one with formal wear. It may also be a good idea to include photographs of special skills or hobbies that you have, for instance, dancing, horse riding, wind surfing or skiing. That is enough to get you started. Stage 3 – Develop your own CV Along with your group of photographs it would be beneficial to create a CV with them to enhance the profile of yourself. It is essential that a CV is tailored to highlight the key skills that are required for that particular type of modelling. Firstly, name is the first thing that should stand out on your CV. The font size should be larger than the other text on the CV and it should be clear enough to read. Below your name should be your personal details – address, telephone number, email, Date of Birth. First page of CV should contain Second page of CV should contain It may also be beneficial to have a section within your CV that highlights your key skills for modelling. For instance, a sound key skill could be that you have acquired acting skills. This emphasizes the fact that you have the ability to model showing real expressions. Stage 4 – Analyze and decide what modelling agencies/schools to visit Location is the first aspect that must be decided on. It is vital to decide in which city, town or even country you are willing to work in. This may be a local town or a larger city that you have researched and think will be a suitable place to try and start your modelling career. It would be a wise decision to choose an area that has an adequate amount of modelling agencies, modelling schools or agents that would be beneficial to your type of modelling. Searching for a suitable agency, school or agent is the next stage in the process. In the location that has been chosen you must find out about all the agencies, schools or agents in that area. It is crucial that you research each individual agency or school to establish if it is a fully licensed organization within the modelling industry. It can not be stressed enough how important it is to ensure that a modelling agency is absolutely legitimate. The main reasons for doing so is to ensure that no money is dishonestly taken from you, that you are working with absolute professionals and you are not in any physical danger. In order to ensure this security there are a number of ways you can check the agencies that are of interest. Checking The Model Worker database lists modelling agencies that are operating worldwide. This database uses all its capabilities to ensure that the agencies listed are fully legitimate. However, there are so many dishonest modelling firms out there, who manage to change their firm's name weekly, that it is extremely difficult to keep track of them all. Therefore, it is vital that you research ALL agencies before arranging a meeting. A good tip for doing so is to ask the local government business department of THEIR area if they have any reported problems with the company. If they have been in business for a number of years trading under the same name without any reported problems then that is a good sign. If they are new be careful. Search online for their business name, address, email, website etc. Also ask the modelling agency or agent for recent references of previous models that they have worked with, as well as their names, email addresses and sample photographs that they took of these models. It is crucial that you contact these models and ascertain what the agency/agent was like to work for. Be aware that they could give you friends or colleagues contact details. They could even give you a fictitious name with an e-mail address that matches the name and seems genuine but they answer the e-mails themselves. The point is that if you find that they are unwilling to pass on references at all then there will probably be a reason - so be cautious. When you have fully researched the company and it seems to be legitimate then it may also be a good idea to take someone with you to the meeting. Another option may also be to seek legal advice before parting with money. By doing so it should ensure that all safety measures are taken. Stage 5 – Preparing for the interview As with all interviews it is extremely important that you prepare well for them. Although with modelling interviewing, it is a tad different from the normal interview, it is essential that you carry out a few vital steps. Ensure that you have prepared your CV as detailed previously Ensure that you have the different types of photographs that were suggested Ensure that you arrive punctually to the agency Wear casual clothes that are well fitted Wear comfortable shoes, not high heels Do not wear excessive amounts of make-up, be natural Do not wear your hair in an elaborate style, be natural Ensure that you have a pen and pad to write down notes Taking these steps allows the agency to judge you on how you really look, hence the reason for the natural hair and make-up. It is important to point out that you may not progress straight from Stage 5 to Stage 6. It may take a while for you to find an agency that is looking for your look. This does not mean to say that you give up on trying to get a modelling job altogether, it just means that you need to stay focused and determined. I worked down to here pm 5-6-8 Stage 6 – Decide what agency to work with At the stage where you need to decide what agency to work in contract with, it is crucial to remember one thing. Although, you may not think that the agency is large enough or paying you enough money, you must think of the wider picture. That is, when you have first hand experience, it can be used to move onto larger modelling agencies. Thus, do not write off some agencies right away think carefully. It is also vital that when you have decided what agency to work with that you check all terms and conditions within the contract before signing. It may be useful to seek legal advice to ensure that the contract is suitable. You must also remember that it may take awhile for the agency to promote you for numerous jobs, therefore you must keep contacting them at least once a week to remind them that you are still eager to work. Stage 7 – Take portfolio to conventions, castings, competitions etc Depending on the contract that has been drawn up between the agency and yourself, it is important to keep contacts within the modelling industry. Modelling conventions are a sound way to attain further knowledge about the modelling industry. They are full of agencies and agents looking for new talent and more importantly gives you the opportunity to speak to them face to face. It enables you to quickly ascertain what each of the agencies is willing to offer and what agency would be best suited to what you wish to achieve in your modelling career. Modelling competitions are also a good way to get discovered and will look fantastic on your CV. Stage 8 – Attitude of yourself In this stage and throughout the entire process it is extremely important to develop a positive attitude. This involves being a complete professional when it comes to meeting and interacting with fellow models and photographers within the modelling industry. If you do not interact well or treat other professionals with respect it may will effect you acquiring jobs in the future. It is vital that you create a good impression on every modelling job that you take on. A good tip for making a good impression is writing down the names and job descriptions of each modelling professional that you meet. This way you will remember them in the future. Another point worth mentioning is that when you attend meetings with agents they may have harsh things to say about you. You must not take this personally or try to change it immediately because what they are saying may not be true. However, if you discover that a few agents have mentioned the same thing then it will be wise to do something about it. Rejection is also another aspect that you need to deal with. Many agents may reject you but the best thing to do is to thank them and do not ask any questions. The key is to think positively because you will find something else.

Oil history

Some historians believe Hitler lost the war because he didn’t have enough of it. Undoubtedly it contributed to a swifter end to the Second World War. There is a sense of community on a rig. Everyone is your neighbour and most people try to get on well with each other. There is the usual friendly banter you always get when a bunch of men are together away from home. Rigs generate their own electricity and water arrives in two forms by boat. You have drinking water and you have “Pot” water, which is used for flushing toilets to washing down decks and windows. The North Sea: North Sea Oil was first discovered in Norwegian waters in 1966. Shortly after that the first Scottish fields were discovered. In 1970 the Forties field was discovered and five years later the first oil came ashore. Scotland now produces more oil than Kuwait. In the mid seventies the UK was in dire financial trouble and it was oil that saved England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland from bankruptcy. Having our own oil meant we were not dependant on OPEC who were forcing up the cost at the pumps and we could pay for the massive numbers unemployed across the UK at the time. Other problems such as the miners’ strikes caused financial pressure for the country that would have been far worse if not for the oil. North Sea Tigers are any person that works in the North Sea UK sector. They said the North Sea would be dry by 1995. In 2008 it was estimated that there was over 30 Billion barrels left, which is more than we have taken out already. We have not yet looked at every part of our waters. New technology is allowing us to drill in deeper and deeper water and in the wild Atlantic waters off the west coast of Scotland. In 2008 Shell brought 4 new fields online and invested over 100 Million pounds into their North Sea operation. They do not throw their money into something that will not give them a return. Oil was initially transported in barrels and that reference of measurement has stuck. So what is a barrel? A Barrel of oil is 42 USA gallons or about 159 litres. This amount of crude oil yields nearly 5 litres of LPG, enough jet fuel for a passenger plane to travel a mile or 1 tank of petrol (gasoline) for an average sized car. Why does the price of oil fluctuate? Supply and demand: The more the world uses, the more demand there is and the more it costs. Then as suppliers catch up with demand, the price may go down a bit. More Expensive Extraction: In many parts of the world including the North Sea, the Oil companies have naturally sourced the easiest fields first. New offshore fields may be in deeper water or deeper below the sea bed or both. They could be in rougher waters or be a long way from land. All these factors and more increase the cost of obtaining the oil. Speculators Game: By far and away the main reason the oil price rises is because of market speculation. Just as in the money markets or stocks and shares, traders can greatly affect prices of the commodity being sold. Many people in the UK if asked would probably imagine that oil prices are rising in the UK because our own supplies are running out. However, even if they were, this would not cause prices to go up compared to the three points above. In the last 10 years, 1% per annum increase in demand for oil. However, the increase in supply has been 2 ˝ %. This means that at current demand, we have enough reserves of oil to last 44 years. There will still be exploration rigs in Scottish waters in 40 years time. In 2004 a Semi Submersible was charging USA dollars 50,000 . 4 years later the price has gone up massively to 350,000. That is a 7 fold increase. Oil companies are still making 10 – 15% profit in their investments which compares favourably with other industries. See wikipedia.org for Economy of Scotland / North Sea Oil

Winning clients

What Clients Look for in Advertising Agencies There are numerous things that clients look for or want to know before they pick an advertisement agency. So it is vital that you are aware of these and have solutions or answers to them all. They will want to know the size of your ad agency. Do not worry they do not mind if it is a large or a small agency, they just need to know if you will have enough people or resources to carry out their advertising needs. They will check to see if you are a member of any advertising associations so it may be a good idea to join a reputable one because if you are not companies may hold it against you. They will ask what media you specialize in and if you have any creative strategies that you prefer to adopt. When just starting up you probably will not specialize in anything specific because your main goal is to get business so use this as a selling point that you will be prepared to specialize in whatever they want you to. They will want to know about your previous campaigns and how successful they were. So make sure you put all your effort into every campaign that you do and if you do not have any previous campaigns then prove to the client that you want to work for them to make it your first and best campaign! They will want to know about the clients you have worked with before and who you are working with now. So make sure you are on good terms with all previous clients. They will want to know who will be working on their account so make sure they meet the people in question and are happy about it. Do not portray that the person pitching to the client will be involved if the really wont be. They will want to know if you know their competition so do your homework and know everything about the clients competition. This is vital especially if you have never worked in that particular sector before. They will want to know how you measure and assess a campaign's effectiveness so make sure you have plans on what you are going to do. They will want to know how much you charge and if you will accept a payment by results agreement. This is totally up to yourself, however if you are starting up money is going to be extremely tight and you can not afford to put money out for advertisements and then not receive any cash coming in from the client. They may also want references from previous clients or people you have worked with so it is vital especially at the beginning of the business that you make a good impression with everyone you work with. Reputation is extremely important!
